Surgery and Genomics

I had attended a workshop at our medical college where the scientists from CSIR-IGIB and a few clinicians discussed various aspects of genomics and it usefulness. In fact I could comprehend only about 10 percent. However, it opened my eyes to a genomics I was ignorant. I started searching online whether it is useful in surgical domain. I purchased one book titled ''genomics for surgeons''. A few non-fiction books like ''the gene, the selfish gene, hacking Darwin and a crack in creation'' fascinated me to no limits.

Wonder-struck at its immense potentialities, I applied for the fellowship and saw dreams of myself being tutored something and doing some procedures. And I got selected. It was a wonderful experience at CSIR IGIB. There was a meditative silence all around . I feel privileged and elated that I interacted with two scientists, pioneers in their fields without even being aware that they did the first Indian genome sequencing.

I had a fruitful time talking to them which gave me a holistic idea to fit in the bits and bits of knowledge the PhD scholars taught us. Our interaction with the director was great that I even forgot about the time.....

I would like express my thanks to all post docs, PhD scholars and research associates and assistants.

This short stint at CSIR IGIB opened my eyes to the fact the sphere of ignorance is ever widening. and there are a lot of research gaps at genomic levels in surgical domain even I could identify. I Am confident now that this exposure at CSIR IGIB would help me delve deeper into a condition I am so passionate. nowadays the dreams I have are related to genomics among others

One unrelated lesson I learnt from the two great scientists was... How to be humble simple and with no airs.. Like they were to us the students who came to learn from them... I was always empathic to my patients, but never humble or near to my students... I feel like I need to change.
